Our brain releases dopamine whenever we find something pleasurable. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure, motivation, and cognitive processes, such as learning. When we sleep, eat, and have sex dopamine is released in various parts of our brain and the message is, “Wow that was awesome, let’s do it again!” Those intense feelings of pleasure, drive users to seek out the “addiction” again and again. Your brain’s limbic reward system will hijack other systems in an effort to drive them all to seek out that pleasure. Systems like planning, judgement, memory, motivation, and organization. Studies have shown alcoholics can immediately spot a bottle of liquor out of a picture cluttered with numerous other items. That’s your brain working all the angles to help you get your fix. When all your daily decisions serve your addiction you’ve become an addict.
