A restful and energizing nights sleep is difficult for many people and even more so for those in recovery. Recovering addicts are quite familiar with this problem. Just attend any support meeting and you will hear numerous remedies to insomnia. The first thing you need to do is not think about it. I know that’s easier said then done. But stressing over it or constantly focusing on your lack of sleep just prolongs the problem. You have obviously tried many things at this point so the typical advice won’t help you.
Let’s try something rarely ever used that I’ve found to work, a sleep diary. Start by writing down your sleep habits, your diet, and other substances like caffeine or sugar you consume on a daily basis. Watch carefully for anything that may be triggering your insomnia. Over time you will see patterns. You may notice certain foods influencing the quality of your sleep. Changing the time you go to sleep or sleeping without a pet could be the key to your insomnia. The only way to really get to the bottom of your sleep problem is to monitor your activities by tracking them in a sleep diary. Do this for a few weeks, review and analyze your entries, and enjoy a more restful nights sleep.
